A bright day for every secondary section teacher, today a few students came to school after almost a year! Following the strict guidelines of social distancing, wearing a mask and hand-sanitisation, the Grade 10 and 12 Applets began the day with Physical activity classes at the campus. They attended the doubt solving sessions. All the subject teachers were present at the campus and were very happy to see their students back at school. On January 12, 1863, Swami Vivekananda was born as Narendra Nath Datta into an aristocratic Bengali Kayastha family in Kolkata. As he became a disciple of Swami Ramkrishna Paramhansa, the saint of Dakshineshwar, he renounced worldly pleasures and became a sanyasi for the service of humanity. He became well-known for putting Indian philosophies of Vedanta and yoga on the world map. Through his speeches and lectures, Vivekananda tried to awaken the religious consciousness among people and also uplift the downtrodden using the principles of practical Vedanta. It was with his iconic speech at World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893 that he gained wider recognition as he touched upon topics like universal acceptance, tolerance, and religion. The speech also got him a standing ovation at the parliament. Makar Sankranti is one of the most widely celebrated Hindu festivals of India. It is dedicated to the sun deity Surya. It is observed every year in January, and marks the first day of the sun’s transit into Makara (Capricorn) raashi (zodiac sign), marking the end of the month with the winter solstice and the start of longer days. Makar Sankranti is associated with kite flying, dances, bonfires, fairs and mass pilgrimages to sacred rivers. Pre school Applets made their kites look beautiful by doing texture painting on it.. Virtual Club session continues and today we are focusing on Pythagoras Club! In the last session, we had a wonderful session based on the area of a circle. Firstly, we were briefed with various area formulas and understood how each formula is derived and works. We then did this activity where we learnt how the area of a circle is equal to the area of a rectangle and we, then started creating our own visual diagram by following the steps told by our club mentor. Various steps which were followed in making the outcome of the activity are as follows: - (The below-attached file is an example of what we did in the activity as well as in the session) 1. Firstly, with a compass, we took a radius of, let's say 8cm and drew a circle. 2. We then cut the circle into 16 wedges of equal sizes with the help of a protractor and numbered them. 3. After that, we took the small wedges and alternated them to form a rectangle. 4. Organ donation as we all know is a very famous term but at the same time, it is very rarely put into practice. Organ donation is the campaign started by Grade 8 Students of Apple Global School which urges people to become donors, create awareness and to bust the myth related to organ donation. To address this concern and to increase the awareness of organ donation Apple Global School and Shatayu have joined hands. The gap between registered organ donor and those waiting for an organ is miserable. India is struggling with an acute shortage of organ for transplant. It is estimated that more than a million people suffer end-stage organ failure but only handful of 3,500 transplants are performed annually. At least 15 patients die every day waiting for organs and every 10 mins a new name is added to this waiting list. Undoubtedly the demand far outstrips the availability of organs. Despite India being the world's second-most populous country, it has a pathetic deceased organ donation rate of just 0.26 per million population compared to 26 in the US, 35 in Spain and 36.5 in Croatia. This Christmas lets spread awareness of Organ donation. You too can make up the decision today to sign up as an organ, eye and tissue donor. Any age is right age, young or old.
